Santa Clara, Calif. - Santa Clara University Director of Athletics and Recreation Dan Coonan announced today that the athletic department made two key staff changes today. Fred Smith was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director, while Steve O'Brien was named the Director of Development for the Bronco Bench Foundation. Smith was formerly the Assistant Athletic Director for Development at SCU while O'Brien was the athletic department's Academic Services Coordinator.
"Fred and Steve have had a strong impact on our department during their time at Santa Clara," said Coonan. "Both Fred and Steve embody the ideals of Santa Clara University and fit remarkably well into the mission here. I believe that they will continue to excel in their new capacities while contributing to the success of our athletic programs."
Smith will begin his new duties immediately after spending two years as the Assistant Athletic Director for Development. His new duties include oversight of the sports medicine department and 13 intercollegiate sports, including volleyball, women's tennis, men's and women's crew, men's and women's cross country and track, men's and women's water polo, softball and men's and women's golf. Smith will be directly involved with budgeting, travel and schedule contracts for those teams. He will also be in charge of the department's special projects designed to make the entire atheltics program more competitive while continuing to maintain a role in fundraising efforts.
A 1998 graduate of the University of Michigan, Smith joined the athletic department in 2003 as the Director of Fundraising and Annual Events, before moving into the Assistant Athletic Director for Development position in 2004. He has also worked in the past at Cal Poly and UNLV.
O'Brien joined the Santa Clara athletic department in February of this year as the Academic Services Coordinator and will also begin his new duties immediately. A 1998 graduate of Santa Clara and a former cross country runner for the Broncos, O'Brien will oversee the fundraising efforts for the Bronco Bench Foundation, which is the student-athlete scholarship fundraising group for Santa Clara Athletics. He will conduct the BBF's annual $1.8 million fund drive and be responsible for the solicitation of Santa Clara alumni, parents and former student-athletes in an effort to raise annual gifts.
As the Academic Services Coordinator, O'Brien was responsible for enhancing the academic portion of the student-athletes' undergraduate experience. O'Brien also served as the moderator of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, oversaw all student-athlete community outreach efforts, and administered the department's CHAMPS Life Skills Program. Prior to coming to Santa Clara, he spent three years in the legal profession as a transactional finance and real estate attorney.
