Bill McPherson and Cassie Perret honored at San Jose Sports Hall of Fame Dinner
Nov. 17, 2006
Santa Clara, Calif. - On November 14, the San Jose Sports Authority hosted its annual San Jose Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner at HP Pavilion in downtown San Jose. Two people with strong ties to the Santa Clara Bronco family were honored at the dinner, Bill McPherson and Cassie Perret.
Former SCU football player and assistant football coach Bill McPherson was one of three local sports legends to be enshrined in the San Jose Hall of Fame at the event, joining basketball star Jennifer Azzi and former San Jose State coach Walt McPherson.
McPherson graduated from Santa Clara in 1954 after playing football for the Broncos. From there, he went on to have one of the most storied coaching careers in football history as he coached at Bellarmine College Prep, Santa Clara, UCLA and the Philadelphia Eagles, before landing at the San Francisco 49ers in 1979. As a defensive coach, McPherson helped San Francisco win five Super Bowls before retiring as a coach in 1998. In all, he spent 26 years with the Niners organization.
McPherson is now one of 57 people to have a bronze plaque on the concourse of HP Pavilion commemorating their induction into the Hall of Fame.
Also honored at the dinner was former SCU All-American volleyball player Cassie Perret, who was named the Female Amateur Athlete of the Year. Perret graduated from SCU this past May after four spectacular seasons with the volleyball team, capping off her final season with a trip to the Final Four. Perret had an excellent senior season as she was named a first-team All-American as well as the West Coast Conference Player of the Year. She finished her Bronco career fourth in school history in kills (1,331) and blocks (333).
