June 1, 2007
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara Athletic Department was awarded the Rivalry Series Cup for the fifth year in a row Friday afternoon, with Athletic Director Dan Coonan accepting the honors at a victory barbeque presented by the San Jose Sports Authority.
At the start of the event, and with staff members from both universities present, Coonan was presented with the trophy by Patricia Ernstrom, Acting Executive Director of the San Jose Sports Authority.
"I want to thank the San Jose Sports Authority for continuing to sponsor the Rivalry Series, and our Santa Clara coaches, who do such a great job in bringing continued success to the school every year," said Coonan. "We are very proud of the achievements of our athletic teams this year in winning the WCC Commissioner's Cup, the Rivalry Series Cup, and for recording a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 for the first time in school history."
This year's victory marks the fifth time in the competition's five-year history that the Broncos have captured the Rivalry Series Cup. Santa Clara won the season series in six of the 13 sports in which they and the Spartans meet head-to-head, with the schools splitting the series in a pair of sports, men's soccer and softball. At the end of the year, the Broncos had clinched the cup with a final tally of 18.5-13.5.
