Jeff Mitchell Named Director of Compliance and Student Services For Santa Clara Athletics

Santa Clara, Calif. - Jeff Mitchell was named Director of Compliance and Student Services on January 24, 2007, after serving in an interim capacity for the same position since October of 2006.

Mitchell is responsible for coordinating the department's NCAA compliance program, including the administration of financial aid, the evaluation of student-athlete eligibility, and the monitoring of coaching activities during recruiting and playing seasons. He is also responsible for providing rules education and interpretations to the departmental staff as well as to other University personnel and representatives of athletic interests.

"Jeff has been a godsend for the Athletic Department," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Dan Coonan. "With his experience and skills, he can help the organization in so many ways. He has already earned the trust and respect of the staff and coaches, which is so critical to establishing an effective compliance program. We proudly welcome him and his wife April to the Santa Clara family."

In 2001, Mitchell received a BA in sociology from Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., where he was a four-year member of the Millsaps baseball team. After graduation, Mitchell was hired as the College's Director of Sports Information, where he served as the primary contact for 14 intercollegiate athletic teams. In addition to his duties as SID, Mitchell served as an assistant coach for the 2002-2003 Millsaps baseball team, which advanced to the NCAA Division III South Regional Tournament. Mitchell also earned an MBA from the Millsaps College Else School of Management in May of 2003.

Mitchell's career in athletic administration was nurtured while in law school at the University of Mississippi School of Law, from which he earned a Juris Doctorate in May of 2006. While at Ole Miss, Mitchell served as a graduate assistant in the Department of Athletics as an assistant operations manager for Ole Miss men's basketball and also served as public address announcer for Ole Miss baseball, women's basketball, and volleyball. Along with those duties, he was internal public address announcer for football games.

Mitchell is a former member of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and is an award-winning writer. Mitchell is also an accomplished public address announcer. For the last ten years, Mitchell has announced Division III football and basketball games, Division I baseball in the SEC and WCC, Division I basketball in the SEC, Division I soccer in the PAC-10, Division I volleyball in the WCC and the SEC, and Division III NCAA Tournament games for basketball.
