SCU Class of '70 Honors Tom Pierona
Oct. 27, 2005
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - A group of about 40 golfers, mostly from the Santa Clara University class of 1970, gathered recently to honor one of its members at the Tom Pierona Memorial Tournament at The Presidio.
The group raised more than $3,000 that will be donated to the Bronco Bench Foundation in Pierona's name during a January ceremony. Pierona passed away in January and was a devout supporter of Santa Clara Athletics. His wife, Louise, was present at the tournament and the reception at the Old Presidio Clubhouse afterward, which was attended by several members of the now defunct Charlie Graham Club.
"This is a tremendous gesture in Tom's name by a great group of people," said former Bronco Bench Foundation president Rick Giorgetti, also a member of the SCU class of '70. "Tom was very supportive of Santa Clara and was a wonderful person. This gift will help ensure his memory and his dedication to Santa Clara will not be forgotten."
Organized by Gordon Roby and Bill McMonigle, both members of the class of '70, the proceeds from the tournament will be presented to Bronco athletic director Dan Coonan and current BBF president Charlie Dougherty at the Jan. 28 SCU men's basketball game against San Francisco.
Since 1962 the Bronco Bench Foundation has existed to support Santa Clara Athletics. Throughout the years, millions of dollars have been raised from individuals, corporations and foundations. For more information on the Bronco Bench, call 408/554-5577 or click here.
