SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University campus recreation program registered a record number of participants in its intramural sports programs during the 2004-05 academic year.
More than 3,500 participants competed in 13 different sports during the fall, winter and spring quarters on the mission campus. Nearly 1,500 registered to play five different sports during the spring quarter.
"It is really encouraging to see a significant increase in participation in our intramural programs," said Director of Recreation Janice DeMonsi. "We have a very active campus community that tends to be involved in a number of different programs and activities. They also provide constant feedback on the sports they are interested in and we have been pretty diligent in meeting their requests."
The SCU campus recreation program saw record number of intramural participants in each of the three quarters. In the fall, 99 teams and 862 individuals participated in flag football, tennis and volleyball. During the winter, 1,177 individuals and 116 different teams played basketball, badminton, soccer and table tennis.
During the spring quarter, a record 1,498 individuals on 148 different teams played soccer, softball, ultimate Frisbee, tennis and volleyball. The spring record surpassed the previous high by nearly 400 participants.
