Santa Clara, Calif. - Director of Athletics and Recreation Dan Coonan announced today that two key employees in the athletic department have earned promotions. Jonathan Clough, who joined Santa Clara in 1999, will become the Senior Associate Athletic Director, Intercollegiate Athletics, while Teal Sewards, in her sixth year with Santa Clara, is now the department's Senior Woman Administrator. Both promotions are effective immediately.
"Both Jon and Teal have served the Athletic Department so well during their time here," said Coonan. "They are very deserving of their new appointments and I look forward to working with them in their new capacities as the athletic department continues to build upon its great tradition."
Clough began his career at Santa Clara as the department's business manager, directing the efforts of tickets, business services, budget planning, financial analysis, capital asset purchasing and University vehicle purchasing. He was promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics in 2000. He was rewarded again for his hard work in 2003, earning the position of Associate Athletic Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. In that role, he worked with Coonan on all department activities, including direct supervision of sports involving 12 coaches and more than 150 student-athletes and assistance with men's and women's basketball and men's and women's soccer. Additionally, Clough supervises the sports medicine department and serves as the tournament director for NCAA Championship events and on-campus tournaments. As Senior Associate Athletic Director, Clough will continue to oversee those areas, while also working with Coonan in a number of additional areas, including budgets, scheduling and the department's general planning. A 1991 graduate of Villanova University, Clough also holds a master's in history from Villanova (`95) and a master's in sports management from Temple University (`97).
Sewards graduated from the University of Redlands in 2000 and arrived at Santa Clara that year to take over as the assistant director of annual and special gifts in the university's development office. Sewards was promoted to associate director for major gifts in June, 2002. During her time in that role, she planned and implemented numerous campaign events and served as the lead capital project fund-raiser for the department of athletics, areas which she continues to oversee. She is in her third year as an integral part of the athletic development staff at Santa Clara University and second as Assistant Athletic Director for Development. In her new role as Senior Woman Administrator, Sewards will attend the West Coast Conference meetings with the athletic director, while also working as a liaison to the NCAA. Sewards will continue to head up the corporate sponsorship sales efforts for the athletic department.
