Santa Clara, Calif. - The West Coast Conference announced today that the Santa Clara University Broncos women's sports teams earned the All-Sports Award for the 2005-2006 season. Santa Clara earned 36.5 points from seven different sports to edge out Pepperdine for the top spot. Overall, Santa Clara finished second in the Commissioner's Cup race to Loyola Marymount, after earning 65 points (in men's and women's sports) in 2005-2006, 2.5 points behind the Lions.
Since the Commissioner's Cup and the All-Sports Awards were inaugurated in 2001-2002, the Santa Clara women have finished first three times and second twice to establish themselves as a leader in women's sports in the WCC. Santa Clara led in points in volleyball and tied with Gonzaga for the lead in women's basketball. Santa Clara finished in the top three in seven out of the 13 men's and women's sports in the Cup standings.
Overall, Santa Clara has never finished lower than second in the Commissioner's Cup. After three consecutive second place finishes from 2001-2002 through 2003-2004, the Broncos picked up their first Cup win in 2004-2005, sweeping both the men's and women's All-Sports Awards in the process.
