SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University's victory over San Jose State in the 2005-06 edition of the Rivalry Series was made official Friday afternoon as Athletic Director Dan Coonan was presented with the Rivalry Series Cup at a barbecue hosted by the San Jose Sports Authority at Alumni Park.
Following a barbecue lunch provided by Peggy Sue's Restaurant in San Jose, and with members of both university's staffs in attendance, Dean Munro of the San Jose Sports Authority took to the microphone and presented Coonan with the Cup.
"We did have a great year in so many respects, and we had four coaches of the year here at Santa Clara," Coonan said, paying tribute to volleyball coach Jon Wallace, women's basketball coach Michelle Bento-Jackson, men's golf coach Robert Miller and women's water polo coach Keith Wilbur. "We're thrilled with what is happening here at Santa Clara, we had the second-highest graduation rate west of the Rockies as well."
This season marks the fourth time in the four-year history of the Rivalry Series that the Broncos have held possession of the Cup. Santa Clara captured the season series in 10 of the 13 sports in which the Broncos and Spartans meet head-to-head. The final tally of the 2005-06 competition was 26-6 in favor of SCU, the largest margin of victory in this four-year span.
