SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University Department of Athletics and Recreation has announced the hiring of Neila Matheny as associate director of athletic media relations. She will begin her duties at Santa Clara in mid-June.
Matheny currently serves as a sports information assistant at UCLA and coordinates media relations activities for the Bruin baseball program, headed by Gary Adams who is retiring at the conclusion of this season after 30 years.
"We are very pleased to have Neila join our staff," said Richard Kilwien, associate athletic director for external services. "She has a gained a wealth of experience in a relatively short period of time and will bring a strong sense of energy and enthusiasm to our media relations unit."
A 2002 graduate of UC Santa Barbara, Matheny entered the athletic media relations profession as a student and worked three seasons in the Gaucho sports information office under Bill Mahoney. While at UCSB, she handled the publicity duties for the men's soccer, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's and women's gymnastics programs. She worked the 2000 NCAA women's basketball first and second rounds and assisted with Gaucho television broadcast productions.
While at UCLA, she has served as the primary media contact for the men's water polo and baseball teams for the past two seasons. Matheny has also assisted with men's basketball media operations and coordinated media requests at the UCLA preseason football training camp. In 2003, she assisted in media operations at the NCAA baseball regionals at Cal State Fullerton.
