SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Bronco Athletics Marketing, an external services unit of the Santa Clara University Department of Athletics and Recreation, was honored by the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) with a national award for Best Single Day Ticket Promotion for an Olympic Sport at the organization's recent convention.
The unit was recognized for its efforts to create and implement the inaugural "Santa Clara Community Day" promotion at the women's soccer team's season opener against Stanford last August at Buck Shaw Stadium. The promotion set a regular-season attendance record for Bronco women's soccer with 4,756 fans attending the match. The total was also the 11th-highest ever for a regular-season NCAA women's soccer match.
The second annual Community Day is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 21 when the Bronco women's soccer team hosts Notre Dame in the annual adidas Classic at Buck Shaw Stadium. Stanford plays Georgia at 11 a.m., with the Broncos/Irish clash beginning at 1:30 p.m. Both matches are scheduled to be televised nationally by College Sports Television (CSTV).
More than 30 local businesses and community organizations, including presenting sponsors Bank of Santa Clara and the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce and Convention-Visitors Bureau, took part in a pregame fair and fan festival. Fans were treated to two of the top collegiate soccer teams in the country as well as the ceremonial raising of the 2001 NCAA Championship flag next to the scoreboard on the south end of the stadium.
The Broncos were honored with the participation of the following in the pregame ceremony: Santa Clara City Council Members John McLemore and Aldyth Parle, President and CEO of Bank of Santa Clara Ron Pecoraro, SCU President Fr. Paul Locatelli and Santa Clara women's soccer alumnae, including Brandi Chastain '91, Megan Horvath '01, Kathy Kale '86, Anny Madden '98 and Michelle Walsh '87.
