SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University's official student spirit organization, the Ruff Riders, will be presenting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Saturday, January 11 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m at the Pat Malley Fitness and Recreation Center.
The inaugural tournament is open to all Santa Clara students and staff and will feature both a men's and women's division. The cost is $20 per team. The Ruff Riders will have a table located in the Benson Center during lunch throughout the week of January 6. Interested teams may sign up at that time or contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
The Santa Clara women's basketball West Coast Conference league opener will immediately follow the conclusion of the tournament, as the Broncos face rival San Diego at 7 p.m. The men's basketball team will open their conference season on Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m. against Bay Area rival San Francisco.
"In the spirit of kicking off a new quarter, a new year and a new season of WCC basketball, we aspire to begin a new tradition with the first annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament presented by the Ruff Riders," said Christopher Bucka, 2002-03 club co-president. "While the tournament should be lots of fun and we look forward to a large turnout, the real aim of the event is to reanimate our members for our home WCC mens and women's basketball games. We anticipate a renewed enthusiasm from our members in SCU athletics to begin the winter quarter, with the intention of increasing attendance at games to watch our excellent programs in action."
The Ruff Riders are the official student booster club for Santa Clara Athletics, and with nearly 1200 members, the largest student organization on campus. A one-time fee of $40 makes you a Ruff Rider for your entire career, providing a t-shirt for each of your four years and free admission to all Santa Clara regular season home sporting events. "This is going to be a very exciting year with a new coach for the women's team and a young men's basketball team that is having a great preseason," said Brett Waller, Ruff Rider co-president. We are looking forward to be a part of two winning seasons and tournament berths for both the men and women."
