WCC Announces Top 50 Student-Athletes in League History

WCC's Press Release in PDF format

Nov. 29, 2001

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Santa Clara University placed eight former Bronco standouts on the West Coast Conference's list of the top 50 greatest athletes in league history, conference officials announced today.

Dennis Awtrey, Steve Nash, Kurt Rambis and Ken Sears from men's basketball, Mandy Clemens and Danielle Slaton from women's soccer, Melissa King from women's basketball and Cameron Rast from men's soccer were each named to the elite list of athletes. Slaton is the only selection on the 50-member squad who is currently active participant.

In honor of the West Coast Conference celebrating its 50th year of existence, the WCC is announcing 50 of the conferenceıs greatest student-athletes to ever grace the courts, courses, and fields over the last five decades. The list includes only individuals from the leagueıs current membership who participated in WCC athletics while the conference sponsored each performer's particular sport. For example, Bronco great Brandi Chastain is not on the list due to the fact that her final year of participation at Santa Clara was the fall of 1990 and the league began sponsoring women's soccer in the fall of 1992.

Each of the honorees is being recognized for his or her contributions to the conference, with primary focus on each individualıs collegiate accomplishments.

All eight of the WCCıs current member institutions submitted nominees to the conference staff to be considered for the leagueıs Top 50 list. The final student-athletes were then selected by the conference office from the pool of nominees.

"The challenge of limiting the selections to 50 individuals was significant, and many outstanding male and female student-athletes do not appear on the final list," said Commissioner Michael Gilleran. "The talent pool was very deep, and I have no doubt that reasonable arguments may be made on behalf of a number of individuals who were not selected. I would like to recognize and thank the 50 individuals who were selected, as well as all the men and women who have contributed to the success of the conference since its inception 50 years ago."

On the following page is a list of 50 of the greatest student-athletes in West Coast Conference history. The honorees are presented in alphabetical order. The full list is also available by clicking here, the official website of the West Coast Conference.
