Santa Clara Scholar-Athlete of the Week (November 5-11)
Merrin Thompson, volleyball, Erich Chen, men's tennis.
The senior from Coquitlam, British Columbia has been a staple in the Bronco program over the last four years and is currently a team captain. She has seen her playing time increase each year, including last year when she played in 114 games (31 mathces). This year she appeared in a all 85 games (24 matches) and is the team leader in overall digs with 288, and second on the team in digs per game with 3.39. She helped guide the Broncos to a 2-0 record over the weekend, including a 3-0 sweep over Gonzaga in which she recorded five kills and a team-high 12 digs. Thompson has also excelled off the court, maintaining a 3.25 GPA in Marketing.
The sophomore San Jose, Calif. is developing into one of the best young players on the Santa Clara men's tennis team. At the Omni Hotels/ITA Northern California Regional that Santa Clara hosted on October 26-29, he reached the semifinals of the singles consolation bracket. He also reach the round of 16 in doubles action with teammate Taylor Bedilion. As a freshman he recorded the 10th best single season mark for singles record with a 17-17 mark, including a dramatic come from behind victory in his collegiate debut. Chen has also excelled off the court, maintaining a 3.31 GPA in computer engineering.
