Santa Clara Scholar-Athletes of the Week (January 28 - February 3)
The senior from Portland, Oregon helped the Broncos improve to 2-1 on the 2002 season with her convincing 6-1, 6-3, victory over Kellee Menke of Portland. She also teamed with Mariko Kawakami for an easy 8-2 victory in doubles. Thus far in the spring season she is 1-1 in dual matches and 4-3 overall in singles, while posting a 5-3 doubles record with Kawakami. She and her teammates will continue their season this week with matches at California and Sonoma State. Nicole has also performed well off the court, posting a 3.33 GPA in Communications during the fall quarter.
The freshman from Honolulu, Hawaii has been making quite an impression during his first year on the Mission Campus. He teamed with Chris Ruso to finish third at the ITA Northern California Regional in October, which led the two to the program's first-ever national doubles ranking of No. 54. He is also the first Santa Clara player to receive a singles regional ranking at No. 26 in the West Region. Over the weekend he rallied for two three-set singles victories against the No. 1 player from UC Santa Cruz and the No. 2 player from UC Davis on the same day. Chris has also started his collegiate career off very well, earning a 3.06 GPA for the fall quarter.
