Santa Clara Scholar-Athlete of the Week (January 21-27)

Julie Butler and Ben Hidalgo were named Santa Clara's Scholar-Athletes of the Week.

Julie Butler

The junior from Tacoma, Wash., has helped the Broncos continue one of their best starts in school history. The Broncos are currently 13-4 overall and 3-1 in West Coast Conference play. Butler has been a steady force for the women's team this season, currently averaging 10.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, both of which are second on the team. She led the Broncos to an early season upset of No. 24 Utah with her 21 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Butler has also excelled off the court, posting a 3.24 GPA in Sociology during the fall quarter this year.

Ben Hidalgo

The redshirt freshman from Foster City, Calif. is making quite an impression at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center with his work ethic. Said to be the hardest worker on the team and a cross training animal, Hidalgo posted a 5-5 singles record and a 4-2 record in doubles during the 2001 fall season for the Broncos. In the Omni Hotels ITA Northern California Regionals hosted by Santa Clara earlier this year, Hidalgo teamed with Frederico Mattioli to advance to the round of 16 before falling to the top-seeded team from Portland. Academically he has also performed masterfully, maintaining a 3.84 overall GPA and posting a 3.52 GPA in the fall quarter.
