Santa Clara Scholar-Athlete of the Week (January 14-21)
The junior from Lakeside, Calif., has helped the Broncos to one of their best starts ever on the Mission Campus. During the course of the first 15 games, Rhea has seen action in every contest, starting six of those games, in helping Santa Clara to a 12-3 overall record and a 2-0 conference mark. She is currently fifth on the team in scoring, averaging 9.0 points per game while pulling down 3.6 rebounds per contest. She has twice recorded double-doubles this season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds against Minnesota, and scoring 18 points to go along with 11 boards against Cal Poly. Rhea has also excelled off the court during her time at Santa Clara, maintaining a 3.25 overall GPA in Electrical Engineering.
The sophomore center from Newport, Ore., is one of the Broncos' bruisers down low. Often referred to by the coaches as the strongest player on the team, Howell is depended on for his defense against the other team's big man. So far this year he has played in every contest for Santa Clara, getting the starting nod in six of those contests including both over the weekend trip to the Pacific Northwest against Gonzaga and Portland. He is averaging 2.6 points per game while grabbing 3.0 rebounds per contest. Jim also put in some time in the classroom during the first quarter of the new school year, finishing the Fall with a 3.20 GPA in the College of Business.
