Santa Clara Scholar-Athlete of the Week (December 3-9)
Caroline Gruening, women's basketball, Ethan Rhode, men's basketball.
The senior from Juneau, Alaska came to Santa Clara as a walk-on and has moved not only into a perennial starter, but a team captain for the 2001-02 season. This year she is second on the team in points per game, averaging 10.5 each contest to go along with 3.5 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. She is an amazing 29-for-57 (51%) from behind the three-point arc this season, and is second all-time at Santa Clara in three-point field goal percentage for a career at 42%. Gruening has also excelled off the court, maintaining a 3.77 cumulative GPA in Combined Sciences, including a perfect 4.0 in the Fall Quarter this year.
The redshirt freshman from Seattle, Wash. has earned a permanent spot on the roster as a walk-on with his hard work and team play. He has appeared in 10 games this year and is averaging 1.7 points per game. 15 of his 17 points this season have come from behind the three-point line. In addition to his hard work on the hardwood, Rhode has put numerous hours into his studies, maintaining a 3.14 cumulative GPA in the College of Business.
