Happy New Year!
Now that the new millennium is here, it's time to focus on the future of Santa Clara athletics! Behind-the-scenes, we have been working feverishly on a long-term strategic plan for the Athletic Department that will provide the direction and resources needed to become one of the top intercollegiate athletic programs in the country.
A few of the main objectives of our ever-evolving plan is simple:
- Improve all our facilities up to top-notch standards and build playing and practice facilities for those sports which do not currently have such,
- Increase our coaching and administrative staffing levels,
- Provide compensation packages to our coaches and staff that gives us the opportunity to recruit and retain the best and brightest in college athletics,
- Provide full scholarship funding for each of our 17 intercollegiate sports to NCAA limits.
The standard to which Santa Clara athletics will be judged over time will be based on the objectives I've mentioned above. Our ultimate goal is to maintain and develop a long-lasting intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation program that provides all Santa Clara alumni, supporters and fans a sense of pride for our school.
The support we have received from the entire Santa Clara community has been incredible. The University administration is 100 percent behind our efforts to provide our student-athletes, coaches and supporters with an athletic program that will compete at the highest levels while maintaining the high standards of integrity for which Santa Clara University is so well-known.
I'd like to spend some time over the next few months filling you in on the details of our goals for the future as well as many of the short-term projects that will significantly impact our athletics programs.
Our first priority is the completion of the Leavey Center. Many who live in close proximity to campus have had the opportunity to attend a game or take a quick tour of the basketball arena since the first phase was completed on Dec. 13. All bias aside, I really do feel it is the top basketball and volleyball arena in the West Coast Conference and probably the best arena of its size on the West Coast.
Our next phase will be completed with a number of long-range objectives in mind. Here are a few of the top components of the next phases of Leavey construction in alphabetical order:
- Academic Resource Center
- Administrative Offices
- Conference Suite
- Seating & Facility Enhancements
- Strength & Conditioning center
- Swimming Pool
I am looking ahead to the new millennium with an ambitious eye and am excited to work hard to keep Santa Clara athletics moving forward.
