SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University Ruff Riders, the official student booster club of Bronco Athletics, were honored as the top Registered Student Organization (RSO) for the month of February. The award, voted on and presented by the Student Affairs Committee (SAC), is given to the SCU club that displays commitment and excellence in the areas of event planning and student activities.
"The Ruff Riders are the first club to win this new award," said sophomore Melissa Meek, Student Affairs Committee Chair. "They've done a great job all year planning events and supporting our athletic teams. Their WCC Road Trip capped off a solid month of fun events offered to the students."
There are over 65 academic, cultural, recreational/sports, political/social action, religious, honors, and social undergraduate student organizations registered at Santa Clara University. The Ruff Riders, founded in 1999 by graduate Kevin McDonough ('01), have grown to become the largest student organization on campus boasting nearly 1,000 members. The club's primary focus is to increase student spirit on campus and at all Bronco athletic events, while placing an emphasis on creating a fun and exciting atmosphere for members and providing an excellent social opportunity to meet new people through an interest in athletics.
Blaze Smallwood and Brendan Donckers, Ruff Rider co-presidents were excited to receive the award. "It's been a fun year thus far and a great honor to receive the award especially since it's voted on by our fellow students," commented Smallwood.
The Ruff Riders were awarded the Outstanding New Club of the Year in 1999 while McDonough received the Outstanding Club Leader Award in 2000.
